Decrease Stress with an Alternative Exercise

Tuesday, April 01, 2014

If you have been in Boston for the winter, you will be hard pressed to find anyone who does not believe it was one of the harshest seasons in recent memory! The constant cold, snow, wind, and ice has led to increased stress and tension in our bodies that can literally weigh us down. With March deciding to "go out as a lion" this year, I know that I am more than ready to get back to enjoying outdoor activities this spring!

Nothing seems to lift spirits and decrease stress quite like those gorgeous days, especially after bouts of gray days.  People on the streets always seem to smile a little more, hold doors, and say more friendly hellos to one another.  There truly is a magical power of the great outdoors.  Studies have shown that those who exercise outdoors work out for longer duration, work out more often, and score significantly higher on psychological measures of vitality, enthusiasm, pleasure and self-esteem and lower on tension, depression and fatigue after exercising outside.

So this spring, why not try to shake up the old gym routine and take in the fresh air, budding flowers, leafy trees and let the outdoor elements boost endorphins?  Not sure where to start? Check out some of these great events happening around the city:
